In BNCT precise determination of B concentration in whole blood sample before neutron irradiation is crucial for control of the neutron irradiation time and the neutron dosimetry. We have applied the Charged Particle Activation Analysis (CPAA) to non-destructive and accurate determination of B concentration in whole blood sample. The experiment was performed at JAEA Tandem Accelerator using an 8 MeV proton beam. The 478 keV ray of Be produced in the B(p,)Be reaction was used to quantify the B, and rays of Co originating from the reaction with Fe in blood was used to normalize the -ray intensity. The results demonstrated that the present CPAA method can be applied to the determination of the B concentration in the blood sample.

Especially in light nuclei such as Be, Li, and C, nuclear reactions are complicated and difficult to estimate energy spectra of emitted particles based only on theoretical calculations Therefore development of a new technique for precise measurements of DDXc is quite important. Recently we successfully developed a new spectrometer for measurement of DDXc using a pencil-beam DT neutron source of FNS in JAERI. In the present study we carried out measurements of DDXc of Be, C, F, and Al using the spectrometer. The present technique was valid from the result of measurement for the Al(n,x) reactions. Slight differences appeared between measured data and evaluation or previous experimental values for Be(n,x) reactions at backward scattering angle and in lower energy region.

This work demonstrates that the energetic particle emissions from laser-cluster interactions can be optimized by manipulating the character of ultrafast laser pulses, i.e. pulse duration and sign of chirp.

In the analysis of side effects due to radiation, we included all the 159 patients treated between 1977 and 2001. With respect to the radiation dose (i.e. physical dose of boron n-alpha reaction), the new protocol prescribes a minimum tumor volume dose of 15Gy or, alternatively, a minimum target volume dose of 18Gy. The maximum vascular dose should not exceed 15Gy (physical dose of boron n-alpha reaction) and the total amount of gamma rays should remain below 10Gy, including core gamma rays from the reactor and capture gamma in brain tissue. The outcomes for 10 patients who were treated by the new protocol using a new mode composed of thermal and epithermal neutrons are reported.

Times Cited Count:2 Percentile:17.03(Nuclear Science & Technology)In order to the waste management method and the safety design of future D-T fusion reactor, it is important to consider the radioactivity productions via not only primary neutron reactions but also sequential charged particle reactions (SCPR). Especially, on the surface of a coolant channel many recoiled protons are generated by the neutron irradiation with coolant water, so it is apprehensive that the undesirable radioactive nuclide production yields via SCPR are enhanced. In this work, the laminated sample pieces of fusion material foils (V, Fe, W, Ti, Pb, Cu) were made and attached on a polyethylene board to simulate water flowing inside a coolant channel. They were irradiated with D-T neutrons. The effective radioactivity cross section and the depth distribution of the radioactivity production yields due to SCPR were obtained for each material. On the other hand, the estimated values were compared with the experimental ones.
